Hideyoshi Toyotomi (豊臣 秀吉) is an antagonist who has appeared in every main game of the Onimusha series. Historically, Hideyoshi is the most famous peasant-samurai in Japan as he rose from being a vassal of Nobunaga Oda to the man who united Japan with his short-lived reign as regent.

Background

Known at the time as Tokichiro Kinoshita (木下 藤吉郎), Hideyoshi came from poor class and wanted to make a life for himself. He later found employment in the Oda clan as one of Nobunaga Oda's sandal-bearers. It was only during the Battle of Okehazama in 1560 that Nobunaga, before or after aligning himself with the Genma, saw potential in Hideyoshi and made him the first of his inner circle.

Warlords and Samurai's Destiny

Despite Nobunaga having be resurrected as a Genma, Hideyoshi expressed no qualms about sacrificing humans to the demons and considered it natural selection. He proved to be a wily adversary to both Samanosuke and Jūbei Yagyū on their adventures as he lays traps for them and once attempted to steal the Oni Genbu airship from the Onis' Sacred Palace. According to history, Tokichiro's role in the conquest of Inbayama castle made him one of Nobunaga's most distinguished generals as he eventually took the name Hideyoshi Hashiba (羽柴 秀吉).

Rise to Power

In the aftermath of Nobunaga's demise in Onimusha 3, having defeated Mitsuhide Akechi for his role in his master's downfall, Hideyoshi takes over the Oda Clan as he uses them to eventually end the Sengoku Period and unified Japan under his rule. In the good he did, Hideyoshi made many improvements to Japan's culture and society that include a ban on peasants using weapons.

However, like his master, Hideyoshi was in league with Genma as the appearance of the Omen Star alerted him to begin preparations to become the vessel of Fortinbras, sending his forces to mainland Asia to conquer Korea while purging his land of Christianity and most missionaries so the Genma can move freely while bringing the Genma Trees to Kyoto to begin the ritual. Hideyoshi's ambitions were great enough that he allowed the Genma to use his concubine Lady Yodo, after she gave birth to Hideyoshi's son Hideyori, to create the Mother Genma Tree with the Genma Ophelia assuming the woman's place.

This set the stage for Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams where Hideyoshi's rule was challenged by his illegitimate son Hideyasu Yūki, under the name Soki. After being defeated by Soki, Hideyoshi learns that he was only a pawn for Gemna as Ophelia rips the Genma Seed out of Hideyoshi before was briefly consumed by the Mother Genma Tree. Though freed after Soki restores Yodo to human form, a remorseful Hideyoshi dies after reconciling with Soki.
